5 Ways to Celebrate the Holidays in #FranklinTN
The holidays truly are a wonderful time. Friends, family, holiday parties, and all the excuses you could ever need to act like a kid again! Around Franklin it is no different, there are holiday traditions that span the generations along with new ones popping up every year. With the creative spirit that fills Franklin, it is easy to find something for everyone, from the unique and quirky to traditional and kid-friendly.
A parade unlike any other
There are Christmas parades, and then there is the Leiper’s Fork Christmas Parade! Head out to this charming village that is affectionately called “a wide spot in the highway” and experience the holidays with farm animals dressed as Christmas characters, vintage cars, and bicycles, and some of the most unique holiday floats you’ll ever see. The residents of Leiper’s Fork pride themselves on having fun, and that is a full display with this wonderfully quirky parade!
The lore of the Leiper’s Fork Christmas Parade is growing – it is “almost world-famous” after all – so plan to arrive early. Grab breakfast at The Country Boy, and by breakfast, I mean the biscuits and gravy (thank me later), then claim your spot along the parade route and enjoy the show!
Step into a storybook at Dickens of a Christmas
Walk the streets of historic downtown Franklin with Oliver Twist, Tiny Tim Cratchit and even Ebenezer Scrooge himself at Middle Tennessee’s largest Christmas festival, Dickens of a Christmas. With the beautiful Victorian architecture of Main Street as the backdrop, there are some 200 musicians, dancers and characters filling the streets which make you feel as though you’ve stepped into the pages of a Charles Dickens novel.
You should also know that the Dickens characters will interact with you, so be sure to don your Victorian-era finest and get answers to those burning questions you’ve had since you first read A Christmas Carol!
Storytime with your Christmas favorites
It’s one thing to hear your favorite Christmas stories from mom and dad as a kid, but it’s a whole different world of awesome to hear it straight from your favorite characters! Load up the kids and head to the Visitor Center in downtown Franklin each Saturday in December before Christmas.
The Sugar Plum Fairy, that crazy Elf on the Shelf, along with Elsa & Olaf, and of course the big man himself Santa Claus will be reading their favorite Christmas tales to the kids. The best part is that it is completely free, but you will want to arrive on time as space is limited. Check out the full schedule of which characters are reading, so you don’t miss the opportunity to meet your favorites!
