The Tastiest June EVER Awaits in Franklin
June has arrived and with it, the official start of summer! That means beating the summer heat by canoeing down the Harpeth River, rolling the windows down and turning up the music for rides down the Natchez Trace Parkway, and incredible summertime events that are filled with great music and even better food! June is a packed month of incredible events around Franklin, Tennessee but here are a few of the ones I’m looking forward to most along with a few fun ways to beat the dodge the summer heat!
Great Slider Showdown
Made South has a reputation for putting on some of the best events in the county and this one was a smash last year. The Great Slider Showdown pairs 10 incredible chefs from across the South with a locally produced protein and then they have to craft that beef, chicken, or fish into a knockout slider! Previous chef contestants have included James Beard Award winners and this year’s lineup is one of the most talented yet. They will also face a remarkable panel of judges that includes, Sean Brock who is featured in the current season of the Netflix show Chef’s Table, Top Chef winner Kelsey Barnard Clark, and chef James Briscione who was the only two-time champ on Food Network’s Chopped. The judges aren’t the only ones tasting the sliders though, everyone in attendance can chow down on their favorites, all while enjoying cocktails from Eli Mason or beer from Flat Hat.
What do you do when you love punk rock/alternative music and breakfast? You combine them into an incredible all-day festival inside the Factory at Franklin and name it BreakFEST, that’s what! Franklin’s own New Found Glory has invited nine of their favorite bands and all will play throughout the day, all the while many of Franklin’s favorite breakfast food vendors and coffee spots will be on hand serving up the best biscuits, donuts, and more all day.
Summer Night Hikes
One of the best ways to experience all the true beauty around Franklin is to get out and take a hike. The family-friendly night hikes Owl’s Hill Nature Sanctuary will not only take you through the miles or trails they have but also teach you to tell a katydid call from a Cicada’s, how to call owls, how to tell a bullfrog from a green frog, and much more. You can bring a picnic and make an entire evening of it with the family and after the sun goes down there will also be a look into the stars for a lesson in astronomy!
Masters & Makers Trail
In June, one thing is always a given – it’s HOT! One of the best ways to cool off is to take the fun inside for a while and experience the Masters & Maker’s Trail that links all the breweries, distilleries, and winery that dot the landscape around Franklin. As you make your way around the county, take in the incredible – hard to believe even – flavor combinations at Mantra Artisan Ales, before experiencing a tour like no other from ‘Pops’ out at Leiper’s Fork Distillery. Then wind your way through the countryside to H Clark Distillery and learn how Tennessee’s whiskey boom has this distiller largely to thank, before cooling down with a classic brew from Mill Creek Brewing Co. Of course, no trip around the Masters & Makers Trail is complete with taking in the sunset from atop Arrington Vineyards, with a glass of their finest vintage in hand!
Carnton Sunset Concert Series
Listen to some of the area’s most talented musicians on the lawn outside historic Carnton. As music from Johnny Cash Now serenades the evening air, explore the historic gardens and battlefield area around Carnton that witnessed the Civil War’s Battle of Franklin. The summer concert series at Carnton is an incredible way to see the grounds for the beauty they hold and as a reminder that prior to the battle it was a place of happy family memories. Food and drink are available on-site for the family-friendly evening, or guests can pack up a picnic and bring their own.
