Gray’s on Main
Location: Historic Downtown Franklin
Set in a ca. 1876 Victorian building in historic downtown Franklin, the Gray Drug Co. was a landmark pharmacy for nearly a century. In 2013, after careful restoration, the three-story Gray’s on Main was unveiled, honoring Tennessee’s cultural heritage through fresh spirits, flavors and sounds. The elevated southern food restaurant also features live music from its second floor performance stage each weekend, including some of the most well-known names in music.
The Gray’s sign has been an icon of Main Street since 1952. The building was vacated in 2004 and stood empty and crumbling on Main Street until early 2012. Owners Michael and Joni Cole used the history of the building to conceptually develop a plan to revitalize the dwelling into a new restaurant and music hall: original wood floors, tin ceilings, wall finished, structural timbers, and Gray’s memorabilia were all repurposed and utilized to maintain the building’s character. On August 4, 2013, with more than 3,000 people crowding the streets, the community gathered to celebrate the relighting of Gray’s sign.
