The one-hour Community Talk: Gangrene and Glory: Civil War Medicine and Surgeries by James B. Atkinson, III, M.D., Ph.D. Professor Emeritus of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and longtime Williamson County resident is a part of the Battle of Franklin 160th Anniversary programming events during Franklin's 225th Anniversary.
Dr. Atkinson stepped on the Vanderbilt campus in the fall of 1969 and never left. He received his B.A. at Vanderbilt in 1973 and entered the combined degree program and received M.D. and Ph.D. degrees in 1981. After completing his Residency training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Vanderbilt, he has held leadership positions at both Vanderbilt and VA. Receiving a multitude of Excellence in Teaching Award and has kept an active role in medical student, graduate student and Resident training throughout his entire career.
